About

A small library, open to everyone.

unbry is a free library of short books about the ordinary difficulties of being a person — putting things off, losing your temper, lying awake, reaching for the phone in every spare moment. There are 80 of them so far, and more are being written.

Every book is free to read in full, in your browser, with no account, no paywall and no email address. Where a book has an EPUB or a PDF, that is free too, and it is yours to keep, lend and pass on.

Why free

The ideas in these books are not rare. Most of them come from research anyone can look up, and from the plain observation of how people actually behave. Charging for that felt wrong, and a paywall would keep them from exactly the people most likely to be put off by one.

Who writes them

Placeholder — replace with your own words. A sentence or two about who you are and why you started writing these would sit well here.

Ratings

You can give any book one to five stars without an account. To count one vote per reader, the site stores a random ID in a cookie. It also keeps a scrambled, one-way fingerprint of your IP address for 90 days, so one connection can't flood a book with votes. That's all it records, and none of it is linked to anything else about you. Your reading progress still stays on your device and never reaches us.

A necessary caution

These books are general information. They are not medical or psychological care, and they are no substitute for it. If something in your life is beyond the reach of a short book — and plenty of things are — please talk to someone qualified to help.
