Bored is fine

When you filled it again

Chapter 24 · 2 min read

It'll happen. A tired morning, a new episode, headphones in the coat pocket where they used to live, and the walk to the car will have a podcast in it before you've thought. You'll notice at the car.

One filled walk isn't the habit. The list from chapter 1 will show a fortnight of empty walks with one filled one in it, and last month every walk was filled. What happened is that the headphones were in the pocket and not the bag, and the default did what defaults do when nothing's in their way.

Take them out late. At the car, or halfway down the road, when you notice. The rest of the walk is quiet, and a half-quiet walk is half a walk's worth of drift, which is more than none. The method doesn't need the whole stretch. It needs the noticing, and you noticed.

Work out which minute got through. Was it the coat pocket? Then the headphones live in the bag from tonight. Was it a new episode you were excited about? Then that's a chosen listen, and it gets a time, sat down, this evening, with an end. Was it a bad morning that wanted company? Then chapter 14, and the company you actually wanted was probably a person, and the walk in quiet is where you'd have worked out who.

And be fair about the size of it. A filled walk is four minutes of a podcast. Last year it was every minute of every day. The habit hasn't returned. It came round once, found headphones in a pocket, and used them, and the pocket is the thing to fix, not you.

No streaks. Don't count empty days. Count quiet stretches, and let one filled walk be one line in a list that's mostly empty. The fill will come back for a walk now and then for the rest of your life, and each time you'll notice sooner, and the noticing is the skill.
