"I can feel the atmosphere change when I walk in"
Some readings are about a room rather than a person. You walk into the kitchen and the conversation stops. You join the table at lunch and the laughter tails off. The atmosphere changes when you arrive, and you feel it, and you know what it means.
Fenigstein's second study is the one to hold here. Students in a group were told that one of them had been chosen for a demonstration, and asked how likely it was to be them. They overestimated it, whether the demonstration was described as something they'd enjoy or something they wouldn't. The group was the setting and the self was the presumed target, and the direction didn't matter. That's the kitchen. Something happened in a group as you arrived, and you were the first candidate for its cause, because you're always the first candidate.
Consider the other accounts, because there are several and they're all ordinary. The conversation was ending anyway, and you arrived at the end of it. The conversation was about something private, and would have stopped for anyone. The people at the table had run out of things to say and your arrival was the natural break. Or, and this one is worth sitting with, you walked in carrying the reading already, braced for the atmosphere to change, and a person who walks in braced changes an atmosphere. People respond to a face, and the face you brought was the face of someone expecting to be unwelcome.
That last one isn't a criticism. It's a mechanism. The reading doesn't only misinterpret rooms. It shapes them, because you enter the room as a person who's already concluded something, and rooms are made of people responding to each other's faces. Some of the atmosphere you feel change is the atmosphere you brought.
The check is awkward for a room, so mostly this is one to leave. "Probably the end of a conversation." And the practical test is the one from chapter 9. If what arrives when the room goes quiet is a question, "I wonder what they were talking about", you've noticed. If it's an answer with you in it, you've read, and the answer is worth as much as any other reading, which is very little until it's checked.
