Tell someone

"They'll take it over"

Chapter 13 · 2 min read

Some readers hold back for a reason that isn't about burden at all. It's about control. Tell your mother about the scan and she'll ring every day. Tell your friend about the debt and he'll have a spreadsheet by Friday. Tell your brother about the marriage and he'll have a view of your partner that he'll hold for ever. The worry is yours. Once told, it isn't.

Three things, and the method handles all of them. The first is the request. Most of what people fear from a listener is the listener guessing what you want and guessing wrong. The daily phone calls, the spreadsheet, the opinion. Those are guesses. A listener who's been told "I don't need anything done, I just needed one person to know" mostly doesn't do anything, and a listener who's been told "help me with the numbers on Saturday and then leave it with me" mostly helps with the numbers on Saturday. Chapter 21 is about saying the request. It's the part of the telling that stops the taking over, and people who carry things alone tend to skip it, and then find their worry has been adopted.

The second is choosing. Chapter 20 is about the listener, and one of its tests is whether the person will hear the whole thing before doing anything about it. Your mother may not be that person for this worry. Your friend may not be for that one. Choosing a listener for their ability to leave the worry where it is, once heard, is allowed, and it's not disloyalty to the ones who can't.

The third is what taking over usually is. It's care with nowhere to go. The mother who rings every day is a mother who's been told a frightening thing and given no job. Give her one. "Ring me Thursday evening, after the result." Now the care has a shape and a time, and the ringing stops being a flood and becomes a thing you asked for.

There's a version of this fear that's about the worry getting out. The brother who tells the cousin. That's a real risk with some people, and the answer is the same as chapter 16's. It's a fact about that person, and the listener is chosen for being someone it isn't a fact about. If nobody in your life can hold a confidence, a professional can, and chapter 24 says which.
